LOWE SECURES SILVER AT WORLD YOUTHS
Teenager Jemma Lowe secured Britain's first medal of the
1st FINA World Youth Championships when she took the silver
in the girls' 200m Butterfly event.
The Stockton swimmer touched in 2:13.52 behind Cartneli Kalisz
of the U.S. in 2:12.34 but ahead of Nina Dittrich of Austria
in 2:13.92.
Lowe (16) was in action again at the end of the first finals
session when she lead the girls' 4x200m Freestyle Relay to
a fourth place finish. Joined by Rachael George (Hatfield),
Georgia Davies (Swim Swansea) - both 16 - and 14-year-old
Ceri Unwin (Hatfield), the team finished in 8:19.52.
Gold went to France in 8:12.38, Russia took the silver in
8:16.62 and Germany were third in 8:17.74.
In the boys' 200m Freestyle final Xavier Mohammed of Bexley
finished sixth. The 16-year-old came home in 1:53.52 while
gold went to Italy's Cesare Sciocchetti in 1:51.97, silver
went to Belgian Yoris Grandjean in 1:52.20 and Scott Flowers
of the U.S. took the bronze in 1:52.23.
In the girls' 400m Individual Medley, Unwin finished in an
impressive seventh place in 4:58.00. She come home behind
winner Mineia Belmonte of Spain in 4:47.58, Russia's Anastasia
Ivanenko was second in 4:50.27 and Bianca Meyer of South Africa
grabbed bronze in 4:51.86.
Davies goes into tomorrow morning's final of the girls' 100m
Backstroke after qualifying sixth fastest from the semi-finals.
