European LC Championships 2006
What a fantastic result for Britain! Well done to all the
coaches, athletes and support staff for a tremendous European
Long Course. The following facts describe the meet.
1 -The Europeans this year were the fastest and most challenging
ever in the history of European Championships
2 - We were allowed 4 entries per nation, per event which
made the meet even more challenging for British swimmers in
terms of making finals (most countries did not do this with
their own swimmers)
3 - Britain had well over double the finalist that it's
ever had at Europeans than ever before.
4 - Unlike the Commonwealths the 200m swimmers had to swim
semi's as well as heats and finals
5 - Britain exceeded its predicted medal target for this
meet and also exceeded its best ever European Championships
medal count since 1958
6 - Britain are European Team Champions for the 1st time
ever as ELC
7 - This was Britain's second major meet for the year where
for every other country competing at the ELC it was their
one and only meet for the year
This was a fabulous and outstanding result and all associated
with this tremendous effort can take credit for their commitment.
My thanks to all involved from the office staff, team management,
sports science and medicine support, parents, clubs and officials,
however our next challenge is the start of the final Olympic
preparations, these must commence on 1st September 2006.
Thanks and best wishes.
