ASA NATIONAL YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
LOWE, PATE & LOUGHRAN TOAST OF DAY 4 AT SWIMMING
TIMES ASA NATIONAL YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
JEMMA Lowe, Louise Pate and Marco Loughran were the toast
of the Swimming Times ASA National Youth and ASA Championships
at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre today.
All three swimmers set new British age-group records to extend
the fine run of form from the country's leading youth swimmers
in South Yorkshire.
2005 European Junior Championship 100m butterfly silver medallist
Lowe led the way, showing sparkling form on the way to winning
the women's 100m open butterfly final.
The Hartlepool-born youngster's time of 1.00.53 seconds saw
her rewrite the record books and made sure she gave the national
selectors plenty to think about as she tries to cement a regular
place in the national senior team.
But spare a thought for 17-year-old Pate who, despite also
setting a new British age-group record, had to settle for
second place on the podium.
Pate, swimming for the Heart of Midlothian club, touched
home in 1.00.70 seconds, just 0.17 hundredths of a second
behind arch-rival Lowe.
And the records didn't stop there, with Loughran making his
own mark in history.
The talented teenager powered his was to a new British age-group
record in the men's 50m open backstroke final, extending his
own Welsh record in a time of 26.79 seconds.
Swimming against older swimmers, Guilford's Loughran finished
fourth with Australia guest swimmer Daniel Arnamnart taking
the gold medal.
Silver went to City of Sheffield's Andrew Shepherd, who finished
second in Thursday's semi-finals, while Dutch swimmer John
Keetman won bronze. However, a fourth place finish was good
enough to break a new record, a great achievement considering
both Shepherd and Keetman are five years older than him.
Other gold medal winners on day four of this year's six-day
championship were Steven Beckerley (Plymouth), James Clarke
(Millfield), Sophie Allen (Lincoln), Stacey Tadd (Bath), David
Hill (Kelly Coll), Emma Cattle (Luton), Belinda Hocking (Australia),
Simon Smith (Bath Uni), Michael Rock (Co Liverpool), Lowri
Tynan (Wrexham), Kate Richardson (Kingston Hull), Sascha Kindred
(Leominster) and Elizabeth Johnson (Swansea Performance).
