THREE THROUGH TO WORLD FINALS
Great Britain had a successful night in the pool Saturday,
with all three swimmers qualifying for Sunday's finals at
the World Short Course Championships in Shanghai.
Breaststroke duo James Gibson (Loughborough) and Chris Cook
(City of Newcastle) booked their places in Sunday's 50m breaststroke
final after a disappointing 100 metre event on day one, where
both failed to make it past the semi-final stage.
Former world long course (50m) champion Gibson clocked 27.31sec
to go through fifth fastest, while Cook was made to swim off
after tying for the eighth place with 27.55sec.
"After the disappointment of the first day, it's great
to be through to the final and in with a shot at a medal,"
Gibson said.
"It'll be tough for silver and gold, but it'll be a
dog fight for the bronze. The team's had a tough time here
and it would be fantastic to come away with a medal at the
end."
Cook, a double gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games in
Melbourne recently, went head to head with Norway's Alexander
Dale Oem for the eighth and final place. Cook was the victor
in the swim-off, going through in 27.35sec, just 0.2sec adrift
of his lifetime best.
Liam Tancock (Loughborough) made it through to the 100m individual
medley final with an impressive 54.61sec. He took the eighth
spot to qualify for his first ever world short course championships
final.
