MCCLATCHEY SETS SCOTTISH RECORD AT WORLD CHAMPS
Commonwealth champion Caitlin McClatchey set a new Scottish
record Friday but finished just outside the medals at the
World Short Course Championships in Shanghai.
McClatchey (Loughborough), making her world short course
championships debut, clocked 4.05.54sec in the women's 400m
freestyle final to take fifth place, slicing over a second
off her best time and setting a new Scottish record.
Marshall (Loughborough) was just 0.27 shy of the bronze in
the 100m freestyle final, finishing fifth in 53.81sec -- a
new career best.
Kate Haywood (Loughborough) narrowly missed out on qualification
for the 100m breaststroke final. In Friday's semis, she finished
ninth in 1.08.49sec, 0.30 away from the final.
There was disappointment for six-times world champion Mark
Foster, who failed to make it past the heats stage in the
50m butterfly. The veteran finished 30th place in 24.45sec
in what was the last race of his decorated 21-year international
swimming career.
Loughborough's Liam Tancock was outside the top 16 qualifiers
in the 50m backstroke heats. He was 17th in 25.08sec, over
a second adrift of his best time.
Tancock is due to race in Saturday's 100m individual medley
heats, while Chris Cook (Newcastle) and James Gibson (Loughborough)
will be hoping to qualify for the 50m breaststroke semis.
Great Britain has sent a small team of eight swimmers to
the championships, which draw to a close on Sunday.
