CARRY AND DUNNING TOP PODIUM AT TRIALS

Commonwealth medallists David Carry and Terri Dunning swam strong races to extend their options for Hungary on the penultimate night of competition at the British Swimming Championships.

City of Aberdeen's Carry successfully defended his title in the 200m Freestyle to touch home ahead of Commonwealth Champion Ross Davenport (University of Bath) in 1:48.83. Davenport, who won gold over 100m yesterday, couldn't repeat the performance in the longer event and settled for silver in 1:49.39. Loughborough University's Euan Dale won bronze in 1:49.70.

"It's been a very long hard few weeks and I've swum in quite a lot of races - I'll be very glad when it's over," admitted Carry. "I'm delighted to win what was such a good race. The most enjoyable part has been the very exciting races I've competed in. It is really encouraging for all of us to do so well."

British 100m Butterfly champion Terri Dunning potentially added the 200m Individual Medley to her European programme as she swam to gold in 2:16.09, just three tenths of a second off the lifetime best she set in Melbourne.

"I swam a PB at the Commonwealth Games and to go just off that three weeks later is really encouraging," she said. "I'm pretty tired so that time gives me confidence for the future."

Fran Halsall (City of Liverpool) boosted her personal medal haul with silver in a two-second best and new British Age Group Record of 2:16.72. Dunning's club mate Sophie Caul won bronze in 2:17.77. Dunning is also in the frame for a medal in the 200m Butterfly after qualifying fastest into the 200m Butterfly final.

In the multi disability events, where the swimmer closest to their respective world record wins gold, British Records fell to Sarah Timms of Alton in the S7 50m Butterfly (44.14), Sascha Kindred (Leominster) in the S6 50m Butterfly for gold (33.72) and Oldham Aquatics' Benjamin Proctor lowered a six-year-old record to 29.69 in the S14 50m Butterfly.

Thornbury's Katie Grey (S9) won the 50m Butterfly in 38.10, Commonwealth bronze medallist David Roberts (S7, Swim Swansea) collected gold in the 100m Freestyle in 1:03.52 and City of Oxford's Danielle Watts (S1) was national champion in the women's event in 2:59.69.

On an evening packed with semi-finals, Scottish swimmers Kerry Buchan (South Aberdeen) and Kirsty Balfour (City of Edinburgh) lead the field into the finals of the 200m Breaststroke, a personal best for Loughborough University's Matt Bowe puts him fastest into the 100m Butterfly final, English record holder Ros Brett (Loughborough University) tops the group in the 50m Freestyle and Stockport Metro's James Goddard is back on form to progress to the final of the 200m Backstroke a clear three seconds ahead of the pack.

With Breaststroke sprinters Chris Cook and James Gibson competing in Shanghai, former Commonwealth Games champion Adam Whitehead posted the fastest time in the semi-finals of the 50m event. In the other 50m semis, Katy Sexton (Portsmouth Northsea) swam sub-30 seconds in the Backstroke while the Welsh Record fell to 15-year-old Georgia Davies (Swim Swansea) and in the men's freestyle, Nova Centurion's Matt Tutty leads the field into tomorrow.
