DATES CONFIRMED FOR MANCHESTER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Organisers of the World Swimming Championships (25m) bound
for Manchester in 2008 have confirmed the dates for the first
event of its kind to be held in Britain.
The FINA World Championships will be held at the Manchester
Evening News Arena from Wednesday 9th to Sunday 13th April
2008 where a temporary pool will be installed.
Crowds of up to 10,000 will be able to see athletes from
the greatest swimming nations compete for world honours while
finalising their skills preparation for the Beijing Olympics
later that year.
Manchester was awarded the championships following a successful
bid to world governing body FINA by an organising committee
made up of British Swimming, Manchester City Council, UK Sport
and the North West Regional Development Agency.
The World Championships (25m) will also act as a celebration
of FINA's centenary year - the body was formed in London,
at the former Manchester Hotel, in 1908.
Katie Brazier, Commercial Director for British Swimming,
said: "We are all delighted the dates for the World Championships
(25m) are firmly in place for what will be a fantastic event.
"All parties involved are excited about the prospect
of holding such an international event especially in an Olympic
year where the world's greatest swimmers will be looking to
finalise their preparations ahead of Beijing."
