HAYWOOD THREATENS 19-YEAR-OLD DISTANCE RECORD
British swimmers Jo Jackson and Kate Haywood were just fingertips
away from setting new British Records in winning their events
at the Speedo Grand Challenge meet in Irvine, California yesterday.
Jackson from Durham Aquatics went 4:07.96 to win the Women's
400m Freestyle and finished in a new personal best time but
just a fraction off Sarah Hardcastle's 19-year-old British
Record of 4:07.68.
It was a clean sweep for the British contingent contesting
the distance event with Jackson taking the gold ahead of Caitlin
McClatchey in 4:12.13 and Mel Marshall in 4:12.40, both of
Loughborough University.
Haywood turned in another solid performance in the Women's
100m Breaststroke as she continues to extend her talent from
her favoured 50m distance. She won the title in 1:08.26, shy
by millimetres of her British best of 1:08.14.
Britain's women celebrated a successful first night at the
three-day U.S. meet with Fran Halsall (City of Liverpool)
setting a personal best time to finish the Women's 50m Freestyle
in 25.89 behind Alena Popchanka, who won the 200m Freestyle
World title for Belarus in 2003, in 25.69.
David Carry (Loughborough University) looked impressive in
the Men's 200m Individual Medley when he touched in 2:02.16
to finish second behind Trojans swimmer Ous Mellculi in 2:01.95.
Euan Dale of Millfield won the A final in 2:04.12.
Adam Whitehead (City of Coventry) won the battle of the British
breaststrokers when he took the 100m gold in 1:03.25 from
James Gibson (Loughborough University) in 1:03.35.
