WORLD CLASS UPDATE - JUNE ISSUE
World Short Course Championships
Shanghai 2006. It’s hoped that a small, yet very strong
and short course focused team will be selected. The team will
be lead by Ian Turner as Head Coach. Turner will lead all
World Short Course teams until 2009.
European Short Course Championships
Trieste 2005. This event will continue to be an important
meet to introduce new, young athletes, coaches and staff to
the international scene. Squads selected for these events
will be lead by John Atkinson as Head Coach until 2009.
Staff at international events will include Ian Turner and
Sean Kelly on the men’s side while Ben Titley and Dave
Champion will coach the women’s side.
Performance and training
The most pleasing performance of the month was Mel Marshall’s
200m Freestyle in Irvine, California. Her semi-final and final
swims combined were impressive. She went 2:00.35 and 1:58.60
respectively.
Other outstanding swims in California included Kate Haywood’s
100m Breaststroke (1:08.26) and Jo Jackson in the 400m Freestyle
(4:12.07).
On the Mare Nostrum tour Jessica Dickons, Jemma Lowe and Lizzie
Simmonds had impressive swims. In Barcelona, Todd Cooper and
Chris Cook also had solid performances.
David Davies has recently returned from a month’s training
at the Offshore Centre in Australia where he worked with Dave
Haller and Bob Treffene. This was beneficial to Chris Alderton,
based at the Offshore Centre, who was able to train with the
Olympic medallist.
World Class Programme
Assisting Britain’s Team Manager John Atkinson at this
year’s World Championships in Montreal will be Nora
O’Brien.
Bill Pilczuk has been appointed to the position of National
Youth Coach
Chelsea Warr leaves British Swimming on 24th June to take
up a role with UK Sport. Her new role will focus on talent
identification.
Jamie Salter leaves British Swimming at the end of the month.
He has been appointed Athlete Services Manager (West Midlands)
for the English Institute of Sport.
Several clubs have had meetings with John Atkinson and Sylvia
Armiger regarding detailed plans for the future and being
involved with the programme. World Class is asking all these
clubs to have a plan through to December 2009.
Any clubs applying for funding will be required to go through
this process of formulating a club plan. Coaches will also
have to supply a training plan and specific plans for their
best swimmers.
Clubs meeting this criteria will have input into the National
Plan for British Swimming to make sure there’s a fully
integrated, multi-dimensional approach to athlete, club and
national body development. Details of this will be available
at the forthcoming roadshows.
