SWEETENHAM PRAISES SQUAD AHEAD OF WORLDS
On the eve of the World Championships in Montreal British
Swimming National Performance Director Bill Sweetenham has
praised the hard work undertaken by the squad.
Britain’s team of 18 swimmers has spent the past 12
days in a holding camp ahead of the FINA World Championships
and Sweetenham has been pleased with how both athletes and
coaches have concluded their preparations.
“We’ve had a very good preparation and the coaches
have done an outstanding job with the athletes,” said
Sweetenham.
“The team enjoyed a great camp in Loughborough where
the squad applied the finishing touches. We dotted every i
and crossed every t as we made sure nothing has been left
to chance.”
The swimmers travelled to Montreal on Sunday and have been
acclimatising to the hot and humid weather while continuing
to make sure they’re in the right shape to take on the
world’s biggest swimming nations.
“Everyone is really looking forward to the competition
starting now,” said Sweetenham.
“The swimmers look great and have done a terrific job
in getting themselves prepared, they’re a very professional
group of people who care passionately about their sport.
“The programme has been lead by Head Coach Ian Turner
and if we don’t achieve the results we’re hoping
for it won’t be down to the good work that’ s
been done at the holding camp.”
Swimming gets underway on Sunday and Britain will be looking
to start strongly to set the tone for the eight-day meet.
However, the swimmers are remaining calm.
“There’s a very relaxed atmosphere in the camp
but I’m sure the excitement will build as the events
draw near,” said Sweetenham.
“As the National Performance Director I have every
faith in the athletes, coaches and support staff and we’re
all looking forward to the meet starting.”
