SCOTTISH STUDENTS LEAD THE WAY
Scottish students Todd Cooper and Rebecca Cooke boosted Britain's
medal tally in the pool on the fourth night of competition
at the 23rd World University Games.
Cooke (Glasgow) collected her third medal of the Games in
the 400m Individual Medley to raise the British total to seven
medals in the pool so far. Her time of 4:45.62 put her a second
ahead of bronze winner Nicole Hetzer (Germany) but wasn't
enough to challenge gold medallist Hui Qi of China who finished
in 4:45.24.
"I'm very pleased with the medal and it was just short
of the British record I set last week," said Cooke. "I'm
particularly happy as this is my third competition in a row
and it was good to improve on the bronze I won in this event
two years ago. I've got the 1500m freestyle tomorrow - I'm
feeling strong and looking forward to it."
British record holder Cooper (Stirling) won silver by the
smallest margins in the 100m Butterfly in a time of 53.41.
Ukranian athletes took the other two podium spots as Sergiy
Breus took gold in 53.37 and countryman Sergiy Advena took
the bronze just behind Cooper in 53.42.
"It was a pretty good performance and I'm glad to win
what is my first major Games medal," said Cooper. "It
was a tight finish and I did well to get my hand there. The
race featured three swimmers from the World Championships
so there are a lot of positives for me to take away from here."
University of Bath's Matthew Clay made it to the 100m Backstroke
finals but was just off the pace in a tight race where little
more than a second and a half separated positions one to seven.
Clay finished in seventh in 56.40, while Masafumi Yamaguchi
of Japan took the gold in 55.00.
In the final event of the night, the 4x200m men's Freestyle
relay team of Ross Davenport (Bath), Alex Scotcher (Loughborough),
Mark Lewis (Stirling) and Euan Dale (Loughborough), couldn't
make it a hat trick for Britain as they finished in sixth
position in 7:22.86.
