PROUD AND DOHERTY DOMINATE BRITISH 5K
Open Water swimmers David Proud and Sinead Doherty took
the honours at the British 5k Championships at Holme Pierrepont.
City of Manchester Aquatics swimmer Proud dominated the Men’s
event to finish nearly three minutes clear of the field at
the Nottingham course.
Proud completed the distance in 59:06 with City of Glasgow’s
Jamie Forrest second in 1:02:50 and Aaron Yeoman of Scarborough
was third in 1:03:47.
Doherty took the women’s title by close to two minutes
when the City of Glasgow swimmer returned in 1:03:58 ahead
of Lynn Duncan of Peebles in 1:05.55 and Jo-Ann McGarvey of
Ren 96 was third in 1:06:34.
The event also doubled as the Grand Prix Final following
six earlier rounds of the series in London, Weymouth, Scarborough,
Market Bosworth, Salford and Fife.
Forrest, with a score of 88, took the men’s title with
Yeoman on 71 in second and Daniel Mason of Borough of Southend
was third on 68.
Doherty took the women’s title with 85 points and victory
in the final after finishing with the same points as Erica
Brown of Chesterfield. Third place went to Caroline Saxon
of Stafford Appex with 58.
