HAMILTON CELEBRATES EURO SILVER
Great Britain diver Katie Hamilton has opened her team's
medal tally with a silver in the 3m Springboard at the European
Junior Diving Championships in Russia.
The 14-year-old, who is the newest recruit to the British
Diving Junior Olympic Programme, picked up the silver after
a strong series of dives that earned her 355.65 points.
In a tough field, barely five points separated her from City
of Sheffield team mate Claire Blencowe who finished in sixth
place with 350.10 points.
Just yesterday, Hamilton and Blencowe teamed up for the 3m
synchronised event where they finished in sixth position against
16, 17 and 18 year olds, the highest placing for a duo of
their age.
Also on top form yesterday were Callum Johnstone and Charles
Calvert (both City of Leeds) who competed in the boys 3m synchronised
event and finished fifth. Like the girls, the Leeds pairing
secured the highest placing for their age group, with only
16, 17 and 18 year old athletes beating them to the top spots.
In individual events Johnstone, who won bronze at in the
event last year, was just 20 points from a podium place in
the boys' 14/15 years platform after he finished sixth with
329.90 points. His synchro partner Calvert finished tenth
with 300.70 points.
In the girls' 16-18 1m event, Louise Van Hoof (Luton Kingfisher)
just missed qualification for the finals after finishing in
thirteenth place. Bagiu Diving Institute's Jodie McGroaty
got through to the finals and finished in eleventh position.
