COOKE SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS WORLD TITLE
Great Britain's Rebecca Cooke has successfully defended her
800m Freestyle title at the World University Games in Izmir,
Turkey.
The City of Glasgow swimmer (Glasgow University) took the
lead from the half-way point and held on to finish more than
a second ahead of the field in 8:31.43. Hayley Peirsol of
the USA finished second in 8:32.89 and Romania's Camelia Potec
finished in bronze position in 8:33.33.
In the men's events, Mark Lewis of Stirling finished seventh
in the final of the 200m Butterfly in 1:59.50, while Matthew
Bowe (Loughborough University) and Kris Gilchrist (Heriot-Watt)
both won bronze in their respective B finals.
Bowe made the podium in the 200m Butterfly B Final in a time
of 2:01.10 and Kris Gilchrist medalled in the 200m Breaststroke
B Final in 2:15.73.

The 23rd World University Games take place in Izmar, Turkey
from 11-21 August 2005. The swimming events take place at
the open-air Manisa Ö.I.M. Swimming Pool.
The Games are held every two years and are open to competitors
between the ages of 17 and 28 who are university students
or who have graduated within the previous year of the event.
At least 7,000 athletes and officials from 170 countries will
be present at the Games.
