COOK CELEBRATES FOUR-STRONG MEDAL HAUL
Rebecca Cooke's personal medal haul rose to three silvers
and a gold with a silver in the 1500m Freestyle on the penultimate
day of the World University Games.
University of Bath's Ross Davenport was also in celebratory
mood as he made the podium in the 200m Freestyle.
Glasgow's Cooke has once again helped boost the British medal
count following a starring role at the Championships just
two years ago, and once more - thanks to the bulk of medals
secured in the pool - Great Britain is within the top 10 on
the overall Games medal table.
Cooke, who was defending her title in the 1500m event, lost
out to American Hayley Peirsol who bettered the Glasgow swimmer's
performance of two years ago to win the event in a new Games
Record time of 16:08.06.
Leading from the start, Cooke was unable to keep up the strong
pace and took silver in 16:22.47. Jana Pechanova of Czechoslovakia
picked up the bronze in 16:37.77.
In the men's 200m Freestyle Davenport lost the Games record
he set in yesterday's 4x200m Freestyle final, but took silver
within record pace in 1:49.16, just behind winner Yuriy Prilukov
of Russia who finished in 1:49.12. Austria's Markus Rogan
won bronze in 1:50.47.
Stirling's Todd Cooper was just off the medals in the 50m
Butterfly as he finished in fourth in 24.15. Sergiy Breus
of the Ukraine took gold in a Games Record of 23.63, Russia's
Evgeny Korotyshkin won silver in 23.69 and Nicholas Santos
of Brazil won bronze in 23.98.
Loughborough's Sarah Healey qualified for the B Final of
the 50m Butterfly and finished sixth in 27.96.
In the diving, Stacie Powell of Imperial College put in a
sterling effort in the 10m Platform to finish in ninth position
with 456.54 points. China's Ting Li won gold with 581.04 points,
Cassandra Cardinell of the USA took silver with 507.33 points
and Na Li, also of China, won bronze with 505.02 points.
