Lake Karapiro, New Zealand to host 2010 World Rowing Championships
The 114th Annual Ordinary Congress of the International Rowing
Federation (FISA) took place in Eton, Great Britain on Monday
28 August 2006 and was attended by 117 delegates from 62 countries.
The main decisions taken by the FISA Congress were:
2010 World Rowing Championships
The 2010 World Rowing Championships have been attributed to
Lake Karapiro, New Zealand. This vote was a ratification of
the FISA Council's recommendation. Amsterdam, The Netherlands
was the other candidate but withdrew their bid earlier in
the bidding process in favour of the Kiwi bid.
Representing the New Zealand bid, Bill Falconer and Craig
Ross came forward to sign the event agreement, officially
sealing their intention of hosting this event and were congratulated
by FISA President Denis Oswald on their victory.
Lake Karapiro hosted its last International rowing Event
in 1978 when the World Rowing Championships were organized
there. These championships were considered by many as one
of the most successful events in the history of the championships.
2009 World Rowing Under 23 Championship and 2010
World Rowing Junior Championships Bids
The 2009 World Rowing Under 23 Championships and the 2010
World Rowing Junior Championships go to Racice, Czech Republic.
Racice, just north of Prague, has hosted many international
events on its international regatta course in both rowing
and canoeing.
Future Congresses
The 2007 Ordinary Congress will take place in Munich, Germany
on Monday 3 September 2007
The 2009 Extraordinary Congress was awarded in a vote by
the Congress to Cape Town, Republic of South Africa over a
bid from Lisbon, Portugal. It will take place in early February
2009.
Council Elections
The FISA Congress re-elected the Chairs of its specialist
commissions; Mike Tanner of Hong Kong China, Patrick Rombaut
of Belgium, John Boultbee of Australia, Tricia Smith of Canada,
Peter Morrison of Great Britain, Arno Boes of Germany and
Fay Kim Ho of Hong Kong China
126 Member Federations
The FISA Congress unanimously approved the addition of Afghanistan,
Bolivia, Jamaica, Libya, Somalia and Zambia as full members
of FISA, bringing the total membership of FISA to 126 countries.
