BearingPoint Rowing World Cup stage II
Germany heads the points table after the BearingPoint
Rowing World Cup
Stage two in Munich, Germany
With 98 overall points, Germany currently heads the BearingPoint
Rowing World Cup table ahead of Great Britain (77 Points)
and Italy (46 Points) at the end of the second stage of the
series, which took place this week-end in Munich, Germany.
Marcel Hacker, the 2002 World Champion did not have a good
Athens Olympics, but appears to be back on form after winning
today’s men single scull in front of his home crowd.
This left Olympic Gold medallist Olaf Tufte of Norway out
in the cold in fourth position. Meanwhile, newcomers to the
single Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand and Ondrej Synek of the
Czech Republic finished second and third respectively.
In these slow head-wind conditions it took until the last
race of the day, the men’s eight, for crews to break
six minutes. It was Italy who overtook the 2005 unbeaten German
crew to win the gold medal.
In a repeat of the Eton BearingPoint Rowing World Cup last
month, the women’s single had gold and silver going
to the same rowers. Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus and Mirka
Knapkova of the Czech Republic finished first and second again
and dominated the rest of the field in the process. Behind
them, Olympic double scull champions New Zealand twins Caroline
and Georgina Evers-Swindell raced against each other for the
bronze medal. Georgina prevailed. The twins will return to
the double for the final BearingPoint Rowing World Cup in
Lucerne next month.
The USA women’s eight out-sprinted their German counterpart
in the “Sprint for the Cure” race, a charity event
raced in favour of Komen Germany for breast cancer awareness.
