International Rowing
Rowing goes forward to London 2012
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted today to
confirm rowing as part of the programme for the London 2012
Olympic Games. The home of the first BearingPoint Rowing World
Cup for 2005, Eton, Great Britain, will be the 2012 rowing
venue and athletes will get a taste of it next year when Eton
hosts the 2006 World Rowing Championships.
At the 117th IOC session in Singapore 26 of the current 28
Olympic sports were confirmed for the 2012 programme. Baseball
and softball were not confirmed and will miss out for 2012.
The IOC Executive Board will now consider whether to propose
one the five candidate sports - roller sports, world squash,
golf, karate and rugby. If so, it will go to the full session
and require a 2/3rds vote in order to move into the London
Olympic Games.
FISA Executive Director, Matt Smith, currently in Lucerne,
Switzerland for the final 2005 BearingPoint Rowing World Cup
regatta commented, "FISA is pleased that the noble sport
of rowing has been confirmed by the IOC and we look forward
to a wonderful Olympic regatta in Eton in July 2012."
