Round two, repechages - 2005 World Rowing Championships
Gifu, Japan – 29 August to 4 September 2005
Today crews came back to race in their final opportunity
for advancement to the next round and, despite the top crews
having a rest day, the repechages saw top class racing and
three new World Best times set.
Two days ago Canada shattered the World Best time in the
lightweight women’s quadruple sculls event. They only
held it for 48 hours. Great Britain now hold the best time
after knocking two seconds off Canada’s time. The standard
was also re-set in the lightweight men’s quad sculls
event when Belgium broke a 13 year old record.
But the big news of the day for Asian rowing came when Japan’s
Kazushige Ura sped home to become the owner of the World Best
time in the lightweight men’s single on his home ground.
Ideal rowing conditions with a slight tail wind and a small
current in the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course made
the breaking of world best times more possible and with semi-final
and final races still to go it is expected that further times
may be beaten.
