Lucas di Grassi GP2 2007 Vice Champion
With 77 points, one win and six podiums, Lucas di Grassi
finished second of the GP2 Series 2007 Championship after
a difficult showdown in Valencia this weekend.
The Brazilian Renault Driver Development squad member started
from 23rd today after he retired from the previous race. His
rival, Timo Glock, who had finished 7th in the Saturday started
from the second place on the reversed grid. In order to beat
the German and keep hope at snatching the crown, Lucas knew
that he had to score five more points than the iSport driver.
It seemed to be mission impossible, but nonetheless Lucas
wanted to fight until the end.
He made a brilliant start and overtook ten cars in the first
two laps. In the meantime, Glock took the lead of the race.
Lucas landed on 13th place right behind the German's team-mate,
Zuber. On a narrow track, Lucas spent the end of the sprint
race stuck behind the iSport driver and he finished the last
race of the 2007 in thirteenth position.
Lucas di Grassi ended second of the drivers' championship,
11 points behind the winner. He was declared GP2 2007 Vice
Champion.
Lucas di Grassi (ART): "Tonight, I
am really sad that I did not get the title. I wanted it more
than anything. However, iSport did a great job this year and
Timo deserves his title. They were a little bit stronger than
we were. That's that. Timo was leading so I took some risks
and they didn't pay off. But the disappointment I'm feeling
tonight must not make me forget all the hard work that I put
in this season: I scored six podiums and one win. Out of the
87 points of ART this season, I scored 77 of them and they
ended up second in the constructors' championship. I wish
I could have offered them the driver's crown."
