Di Grassi closes in on GP2 lead
Lucas di Grassi closed on GP2 points leader Timo Glock after
finishing third in the Sunday sprint race at Spa. Going into
the final event in Valencia, the German leads on 79 points,
while Lucas has 77.
After finishing third in the Saturday race Renault Driver
Development squad member di Grassi started the Saturday event
from sixth place. Once again he made a great start with the
ART car, charging up to third place at the first corner. He
spent the rest of the race shadowing the cars of Andy Soucek
and Karun Chandhok, but was never quite in a position to make
a pass.
Meanwhile Glock failed even to start the race after crashing
while warming his tyres on the way to the grid.
‘I saw Glock at the side of the road before the start.
It didn't really change anything because he was out, as he
was starting quite far behind anyway. For him to score any
points would have been difficult. Anyway, when I saw him out
I knew that he was not scoring any points for sure, so I guess
I could take more risks.
‘I made a good start, but I had to avoid Mike Conway,
who was very slow and was just in front. I lost a little bit
of pace because of that. I still made it to third, and I was
pushing really hard all the race. But in the end I was not
fast enough to get Chandhok and Soucek.
‘But in terms of the championship I'm quite happy with
four points. He is two points ahead, and I think Valencia
will be a good fight. There is no testing before then, but
we can have a good look at the data that we have from this
weekend, and try to find out where we can improve the car,
and how I can improve my driving. We want to arrive in Valencia
and give the maximum performance possible.'
The Valencia race, the only round not supporting a Grand
Prix, takes place on September 29-30.
