Di Grassi holds second in GP2 championship
Lucas di Grassi maintained a secure second place in the GP2
championship after finishing sixth in the Sunday sprint race
at the Nurburgring.
Following his runner-up spot in the Saturday race the Renault
Driver Development squad member started from seventh place.
He gained a place at the start, but later the ART car was
bumped from behind by Giorgio Pantano. By the time he had
regained momentum, title rival Timo Glock had got past.
Lucas later moved back to sixth place when a driver ahead
retired, but in a race that saw virtually no overtaking at
the front, he found it impossible to make any further progress.
He now lies seven points behind Glock in the title race, and
nine ahead of Luca Filippi.
‘The start was good, and I was in front of Glock and
Pantano. But then I had a touch from Pantano, and Glock was
able to get past me. After that, the race was quite boring!
When you are behind someone you lose so much downforce, and
it's very hard to overtake. But I tried to push Glock as hard
as I could. We need to check if the car was damaged after
the touch, which was quite hard, but for sure it wasn't the
same as it was at the beginning.'
The next race is in Hungary in a fortnight's time, and Lucas
if confident of getting a good result.
‘Since the beginning of the year it was a big fight
between iSport and me. It was not in doubt that it was going
to be a tough fight, and it was really tough with Timo, who
has been quite consistent. But it's only seven points difference,
and in one weekend you can earn 20, so there is a long, long
way to go.
‘I'm pretty happy with the results and how the team
has been working and improving the car every time. I think
the gap to iSport is much smaller than it was a couple of
races ago. We're going to work hard and try to beat them in
Budapest. Last year it was a bit strange with the weather,
but it's a very nice track and I hope we can do well there.'
