WE SEE AND FEEL ONLY WHAT WE KNOW AND UNDERSTAND
When it comes to technique and training, it is very common
for novice runners or athletes in general to believe that
what they think they see is what is really happening.
Do we see things as they really are? Or do we only see what
we know and understand? When a person in a position of influence
speaks - people listen and accept it as is. We "filter"
lots of information that way. But in the absense of a leading
opinion, we're left to decipher for ourselves. If we do not
have knowledge of a particular subject, our experience and
understanding become our "filter".
Often this "filter" is based on little and/or incorrect
information, it distorts the facts and there is no logic or
connectedness in "theory". This bad filter conditions
us to have wrong understanding and wrong perceptions. This
is how things like "pounding of the ground" and
injuries in running became a norm.
Done right, running is one of the most enjoyable physical
activites.
When starting with the Pose Method® of Running, we recommend
to "start from ground 0". Forget what you thought
you knew about running! Start as if you never ran before.
Start with learning how to run.
Do not listen to your senses - they are deceiving you at
this point because there is no prior proper training so your
only guideline is your experience. Unfortunately "experience"
is not "proper training". So block everything out
and start anew.
First you have to know the theory and what is considered
a "standard" in running. Once you have a clear understanding
and a clear picture of the standard, you can see the mistakes
- deviations from the standard.
A thorough understanding of the theory part will help you
create new perceptions which will help you enforce correct
technique. With practice you will finesse your perceptions
and in turn your technique. Eventually you will be able to
see things that you cannot see now.
