British Elite Orienteering Championships June 7th-8th, Lake
District.
GB SQUAD MEMBER JENNY WHITEHEAD
WINS BRITISH ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR THE FIRST TIME
UK no.1s Jamie Stevenson and Heather Monro stayed away this
year but it didn't prevent the weekend from being a highly
competitive set of races showing the strength in depth of
British Orienteering.
Saturday's beautiful sunshine saw the British Elite Short
Race take place on Haverthwaite, near Newby Bridge.
Sarah Rollins, running for British Army, added the title
of British Elite Short Race Champion to those of British Sprint
and Night Race Champion won earlier this season She won the
3.7km course through tough, tricky terrain by just 19 seconds
from Jenny Whitehead, York, with Kim Buckley taking the bronze,
by just 2 seconds from Helen Winskill, South Yorkshire.
In the Men's race, Oli Johnson, South Yorkshire,
won by an impressive 1 minute and 2 second margin from reigning
champion Jon Duncan, with local hero Ed Nash in 3rd. Johnson,
World Students Bronze medalist last year, was pleased to pick
up his first senior national title
'I really enjoyed it out there the terrain was fantastic
and apart from a few hesitations I ran a really good race'.
The Junior Women's Race was won by Scot
Fiona Berrow with David Hodkinson taking the Junior Men's
title.
On Sunday, High Dam (west of Lake Windermere) was the setting
for the British Elite Classic Race. Persistent rain marred
the race as a spectacle but the tough courses challenged the
best in Britain. In a reversal of the previous day's results
Ed Nash was crowned Men's Champion with Jon Duncan once again
2nd and Oli Johnson 3rd. Duncan's results over the weekend
were enough to see him win the UK Cup series overall for this
year.
In the Women's race Jenny Whitehead won
the British Elite title for the first time, preventing Sarah
Rollins from adding to her triple crown but couldn't prevent
her from winning the UK Cup. Buckley finished 2nd and Rollins
3rd. Whitehead was delighted with her first senior title adding
to several as a junior. Jenny expressed:
'I was really going for the win today after the disappointment
of the short race yesterday. I wanted to get my name on the
trophy today and I'm delighted! I started hard and just tried
to keep it up, lost a bit of time out there but no real mistakes.'
The Junior Races saw Junior World Championships
team members Matt Speake, York, and Mhairi MacKenzie, Borderliners,
victorious.
