MSA Championships Update 31 March 2008

Link Up Ltd MSA British Autotest Championship

Round 1 - Foxley Autotests, Herefordshire Motor Club

Alastair Moffatt took a convincing victory setting the fastest times on 14 of the 16 tests on his home event at the Foxley Estate. Torrential rain the day before made the early morning runs very slippery and Moffatt was able to use the superior grip of the Mini Special to open up an early lead over the Lotus 7 of Malcolm Livingston. Ashley Lamont making his MSA Championship debut, put in some very quick times in the lightweight Westfield to keep in trading times with Livingston, but too many penalties were his downfall and ended the day with 3rd overall. Gavin Dickson was the best of the saloon cars, bringing the Nova home in 6th overall with Carl Sams hot on his heels, Sams had led the class until Test 8 where he dropped over 8 seconds to allow Dickson to take over at the front of the class. John Moffatt was another Nova driver in the hunt for class honours, but two driveshaft failures meant he had to settle for 3rd.

Next round: Bolton Le Moors MC, Bolton Autotest. 20th April 2008.

SBD Motorsport MSA British Sprint Championship

Round 2 - Castle Coombe

With rain sweeping across the Castle Combe track there were spins galore in the second round of the SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship. When it came to the run-off late in the day, surprise fastest qualifier Steve Miles maintain his form. He led after the first runs but had slipped down the order when he took run number two. Despite a moment at one of the 'new' chicanes, Miles charged back into the lead. Nick Algar climbed from third place to second finishing clear of championship debutante Des Stephenson. Dan Pickett switched to his old Jedi thanks to current owner Andy Langley; Pickett had several moments en route to fourth. The Pillinger family took fifth & sixth and this weekend son Scott beat his father Dave by the narrowest of margins. Graham Porrett managed to salvage seventh after a series of spins but co-driver Terry Holmes, the pre-event favourite, failed to qualify.

Round 1 - Brands Hatch

Fabrizio Giovanardi (Vauxhall) got his title defence off to a winning start with victory in two of Brands Hatch's opening three rounds. Mat Jackson (BMW) had taken pole position but Giovanardi passed him during a shower to win race one, while Jason Plato gave SEAT's new Leon TDI third on its debut - the first BTCC podium result for a diesel car. Giovanardi then dominated race two from pole position. Colin Turkington (BMW) won race three from the front of the reversed grid but was under pressure from Jackson, their cars exiting the final bend almost neck and neck, making for great TV during five hours of live ITV4 coverage.
