2008 Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship

Brogan grabs Supersport win at Thruxton

British Supersport ChampionshipWith heavy snow having prevented the originally scheduled opening round taking place at Brands Hatch earlier this month, the 2008 Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship finally got underway at the ultra fast Thruxton race circuit. As predicted the initial encounter between the country’s best Supersport riders was a thrilling affair. Steve Brogan on his HM Honda eventually took the win in this class, by just under a second from the highly experienced Glen Richards onboard the MAP Embassy Racing Triumph, after an intense eighteen-lap battle. The advent of the introduction of a single make tyre to the 600cc domestic series proved an important ingredient in producing close competition throughout the weekend.

The fight between these two riders begun during Saturday’s incident packed qualifying session that was stopped no less than on four occasions, as one crash was quickly followed by another, until finally a red flag brought a close to the squabble for pole position. It was Richards who claimed the initial advantage, by beating Brogan by less than 0.4 of a second, as less than a second separated the top six places on the provisional grid.

Richards converted his pole position into to an early race lead, before Brogan moved to the front thanks to a brave move on the fourth gear entry to Church on lap two. From this point on the leading duo fought wheel to wheel for the entire duration of the race, with the lead swapping on several different occasions. The deployment of the safety car on lap six slowed proceedings momentarily, but did little to spoil what transpired to be a true fight to the flag. Brogan’s Supersport win, was one of two victories on the day for the Honda rider, with him also taking top honours in the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship earlier in the meeting.

Fuchs-Silkolene are proud to be the official lubricant of the 2008 British Superbike Championship in addition to being title sponsors of the 2008 British Supersport Championship.
