2008 Fuchs Silkolene British Supersport Championship
Snow
stops racing, but the show goes on for Silkolene
Heavy snow prevented the opening round of the 2008 Fuchs Silkolene
British Supersport Championship taking place at Brands Hatch
on Sunday, following weeks of anticipation about a series
which is regarded as one of the best and most competitive
domestic championships for supersport machines anywhere in
the World. No less than five of the planet’s leading
manufacturer’s will take part in the 2008 championship,
which includes a British racing great in the form of Triumph
motorcycles.
Slightly smaller in both capacity and size than their bigger
superbike brothers, the supersport machines are equally thrilling
in terms of action out on the track, with limited permitted
modifications producing close and compelling racing. The production
based, ‘road going look a likes’ motorcycles can
only have changes made to the exhaust systems, suspension
internals and obviously the tyres. Three engine categories
means that all types of bikes are catered for as long as they
meet one of the following criteria: 400 to 600cc four cylinder
four stroke / 600 to 675cc three cylinder four stroke and
600 to 750cc two cylinder four stroke.
The revised 2008 championship, which will see the introduction
of a single make tyre supply, will now kick off at Thruxton
on the 20th April following the cancellation of yesterday’s
meeting. The good news is that Motorsport Vision, the championship
organisers, have already announced a replacement date back
at Brands Hatch on the 11th May to maintain the twelve round
status of the series. Over the next six months the Fuchs Silkolene
British Supersport Championship will visit all of the UK’s
leading circuits, as a whole host of talent and technical
expertise fights it out to be declared champion when the title
race comes to a close back at Brands Hatch in early October.
Although obviously disappointed at the cancellation, Fuchs
Silkolene’s UK Marketing Manager Edward Janes praised
the actions of both Motorsport Vision and Brands Hatch. “With
so much anticipation and excitement surrounding the opening
round, plus with so many race fans already on site and still
arriving it was a very difficult decision to take. But given
the circumstances it was the correct and proper decision that
the organisers and the circuit handled fantastically given
the conditions. The fact they already confirmed another date
and that all tickets will be valid for the new meeting in
May is great news for everyone involved, and especially the
fans who totally respected yesterday’s decision. All
I can say now is roll on the 20th of April.”
With no action out on track, the Fuchs Silkolene grid girls
created their own entertainment and ensured that the show
went on despite the snow, as the attached image clearly illustrates.
