NEW CHAMPION BOU ENDS SEASON AS HE BEGAN
Newly
crowned Trial World Champion, Toni Bou – Repsol Montesa
HRC today claimed victory at the ninth and final round of
the 2007 FIM SPEA Trial World Championship, held in Sant Julia
de Loria in the small principality of Andorra. Adam Raga –
Gas Gas took second place with Dougie Lampkin – Repsol
Montesa HRC coming third.
Following the cancellation of what was to be the final round
of the 2007 series due to be held in Belgium on the 23rd September,
Bou entered this round in the position where it was impossible
for him to be beaten and was, by default, 2007 Champion. His
day did not start in the best of fashions with a dab on the
opening section, which his major rivals completed clean.
However he was to claim that mark back on section five of
the opening lap dropping two where the remainder of the top
riders all dropped a minimum of three marks. Despite dropping
an uncharacteristic five on the tough thirteenth section,
this was to make no difference to overall scores with maximums
being recorded across the board.
Despite dropping just eight marks in the first half of competition,
Bou was to finish the opening lap on a score of thirteen after
picking up five time penalties. With Raga dropping twelve
marks on the lap and one further time penalty, the pair were
tied entering the second lap.
However, leaving aside the impossible section thirteen, which
all riders dropped five on, Bou proved exactly why he is the
new World Champion, with just a single dab on the seventh
section to finish the lap on a score of six to Raga’s
twelve to give Bou his ninth top podium place from eleven
days of competition.
With the Junior championship winner already decided and Champion,
Michael Brown - Beta electing to compete in the World class
for this final round where he finished ninth, victory went
to Alfredo Gomez – Gas Gas in his first ever appearance
in the Junior category. Gomez having already won the Youth
championship class and also exercising his right to move up
to the next championship class. Second place went to Sam Haslam
– Gas Gas with Matteo Grattarola - Sherco finishing
third.
With Brown already declared winner, championship runner-up
was Alexz Wigg – Gas Gas with Nicolas Gontard –
Gas Gas finishing third in the overall standings. The final
event in the Youth championship went to David Millan –
Sherco with Alexis Cervantes – Sherco second and Ross
Danby – Gas Gas taking the remaining podium position.
The Youth championship ended with Gomez winning, Danby second
and Cervantes finishing in third position.
