De Dycker and Searle shine in Devon
Reigning
British MX1 champion Ken De Dycker - CAS Honda narrowly increased
his lead at the top of the current championship standings,
as he repeated his round one victory by taking the overall
honours at the second meeting of the 2007 series held at Landrake,
Devon. The Belgian rider now heads the Irish ex domestic titleholder
Gordon Crockard – PAR Honda by a mere ten points, after
the Ulsterman again filled the runners up spot on the day.
Completing an identical top three to the opening round at
Canada Heights, Billy Mackenzie – De Groot Kawasaki
placed third overall to create a familiar podium line up.
Tommy Searle – KTM UK got the nod in the MX2 class,
by virtue of having the better second moto result, after the
teenager tied on points with West Country favourite Tom Church
– Molson Kawasaki. The young pairing shared a race win
and a fourth place apiece. Whilst it was Searle who walked
away with the winners’ trophy on the day, it is the
sensation of the season so far, Shaun Simpson – Wulfsport
Kawasaki who will take the championship lead to the third
round, after two consistent second places at Landrake gave
him third overall and a slender seven point advantage in the
current championship standings.
Around four and half thousand West Country race fans enjoyed
a weekend of good weather, which helped create some fantastic
racing on a revised and improved circuit. The dry and hard
packed conditions saw lap times of approximately two minutes
and ten seconds, with the new technical part of the track
separating the men from the boys. The split rhythm section
produced many of the passing opportunities, with the GP riders
taking full advantage of their extra speed through this part
of the circuit.
The action got underway with the opening race for the newly
introduced MXY2 youth class. The young riders coped well with
the demanding track, and their enjoyment of competing at such
a prestigious meeting could not be hidden, as all three of
the podium placed riders offered their praise for the chance
to perform in front of such a large crowd.
Carl Nunn, the reigning MX2 British champion, was a non starter
due to the back injury he sustained at the Hawkstone Park
International meeting earlier in the month, and which was
further aggravated when he bravely took part at the opening
round at Canada Heights. With Nunn out of action, MX2 round
one winner Gareth Swanepoel – Molson Kawasaki was looking
to further increase his series lead, but was cruelly stopped
in his tracks when his engine failed whilst heading the first
moto. Whilst a runners up spot in the second race was of some
consolation, his mechanical problem has now dropped to him
fifth place in the championship.
The series pauses briefly to allow for the opening MXGP in
Holland this coming weekend, before normal service is resumed
with the next round of the series taking place at Lyng, Norfolk
on Easter Sunday 8th April 2007, please visit the official
championship website - www.mxgb.co.uk - for further details.
