World Outdoor Trials Championship Myslenice, Poland
Round 6 Day 1 Sunday (1 day event) 08/07/07
Dougie
Lampkin finished the sixth round of the 2007 championship
in fifth place today, just five marks off fourth place and
a tantalising single further mark from the podium. The final
result did not belie the Yorkshireman’s efforts, as
he began with one of his best rides so far this season, which
had him leading the event after the first ten sections of
the first lap.
The going was tricky on the fifteen sections, which were
almost identical to those used on last year’s event.
Like most of Europe, the region experienced heavy rain in
the days preceding the start, which led to parts of the course
being particularly slippery, while others offered more grip.
Lampkin was clearly on form out of the box and notched up
just nine marks on the first twelve sections. However, he
picked up an unlucky five at the next hazard when a rock got
caught underneath his footrest and tipped him over. Despite
this, he still ended the first lap second, to his team-mate
Toni Bou.
Lampkin’s second lap also started well and he was settling
into the form that netted him multiple titles. However, things
were soon to turn around, as he fived sections four and five.
The fourth hazard was a tricky task, but he admitted the next
was much easier and he shouldn’t have taken full marks
there. He also stalled his factory Cota 4 twice in the remainder
of the lap, picking up eight marks in the process. He was
clearly frustrated at the result, which without these extra
marks, would have seen him finish second and make a welcome
return to the podium.
Lampkin stated. “My day started well and I felt comfortable
riding, but I had an unlucky five on section thirteen. The
second lap also started well but then I five’d sections
four and five and stalled twice, which put pay to a decent
result. It was a very frustrating end to a day that started
well.
“My hand was also quite painful during the day. Even
though I’ve deliberately taken it easy and this wasn’t
a particularly physically demanding trial, it’s taken
quite a lot of punishment. I feel more tired after today than
I did last weekend, despite it being a tougher event in Italy.”
