World Outdoor Trials Championship Kramolin, Czech Republic
Round 7 Day 1 Sunday (1 day event) 15/07/07
Dougie
Lampkin finished the seventh round of the 2007 FIM SPEA Trial
World Championship in the Czech Republic in seventh place
today, after a ride which, by his own admission, simply didn’t
come together. The Yorkshireman never demonstrated the form
that has netted him multiple titles and was clearly disappointed
by the result.
Like last week’s round in Poland, there had been rain
in the run-up to the event and therefore the ground was damp
as the riders prepared for the event. However, the weekend
was clear and warm, with temperatures in the mid 30s, but
this was not enough to dry out the ground in the woodland
sections, which consisted almost entirely of climbs up a succession
of rocky outcrops and boulders.
The first lap started well enough, with Lampkin cleaning
the first five sections. On section six, he opted to avoid
a particularly daunting climb up a large boulder, which no-one
had managed so far and rode between a tree and the rock face,
picking up three marks in the process. He did manage to avoid
the five, which most other riders picked up though. However,
he was soon to begin making mistakes, and a pair of fives
on the first lap and three on the second, including the second
run through section six, meant he dropped down the order to
seventh.
Lampkin stated. “There was nothing specific wrong today,
it simple didn’t come together. I was off it from the
start to the finish and I can’t put my finger on why.
Some of the sections I cleaned on the first lap, I fived on
the second for no particular reason. I was also picking up
fives in sections that other riders were cleaning and that
was always going to cost me dearly.”
“On section ix, I decided to avoid the huge rock climb,
which no-one had cleaned and went round a tree instead. It’s
always tricky when you’re riding at the front and you’re
not sure what the other riders are doing. I didn’t want
an early five so I tried that and took three marks instead
of the fie. But now I’m looking forward to my home round
– it’s always good to ride in front on your home
crowd.”
