FANS FLOCK TO SEE BORUSSIA DORTMUND SUPERLEAGUE FORMULA
CAR
Fans
of German football club Borussia Dortmund today became the
first supporters to see first hand their club's entry into
the new Superleague Formula championship.
With more than 30,000 supporters on site at Signal Iduna
Park at the club's annual fan day, Borussia Dortmund's yellow
and black Panoz/Elan chassis was pushed onto the pitch and
introduced to the supporters.
Earlier, the passionate BVB fans got the chance to take a
close look at the car that was on display outside where dozens
of football-related activities and attractions were taking
place.
Today's event followed Friday's official unveiling where
club coach Thomas Doll, captain Christian Wörns plus
leading players including Tinga, Sebastian Kehl and Roman
Weidenfeller revealed the car for the local media.
"Our focus group market research had indicated that
fans were excited at the mix between the passion of football
and the excitement of motorsport," Superleague Formula
CEO, Alex Andreu said.
"That research was certainly confirmed today. Since
the gates opened at 11am, thousands of fans have been taking
a look at the car, taking photos, asking questions –
they are all very excited about the concept.
"Football club supporters are madly passionate about
their club and they want to see their colours win –
whether it's on the football pitch or the racetrack. The Dortmund
fans were very excited about being the first German club to
join – they now want to be the first German club to
win.
"Today was a great opportunity for us. Football and
motorsport are hugely popular in Germany and Dortmund provided
the perfect location to show the fans what this championship
is all about."
Borussia Dortmund joins AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos
and FC Porto in the championship which will kick off in August
next year.
Launched in April this year, Superleague Formula will feature
more than 20 of world football's leading rivals doing battle
on top class race tracks throughout Europe. For its debut
season, six championship rounds will be staged with each race
weekend featuring two races – one with a complete reverse
grid.
While the fans got a close look at the car today, club President
Dr. Reinhard Rauball got an even closer look – taking
the chance to climb behind the wheel after the car was wheeled
onto the pitch.
"Our first race is a little over 12 months away and
the momentum of the championship is really starting to build,"
Andreu said.
"We are planning a number of announcements in the upcoming
weeks as we finalise contracts with several clubs.
"We are also looking forward to introducing fans of
our already signed clubs to their Superleague Formula car.
Today was immensely successful for us and we can't wait to
show off the car to football fans from other countries."
