Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship 2007
Preview – Rnd 7 Brampton – Sunday 12th
August
Brampton set for title fight prelude
With
just two rounds remaining, Sunday 12th August is a must for
all race fans, as Brampton, Cumbria hosts the penultimate
round of the 2007 Maxxis ACU British Motocross championship.
The North West based circuit has been absent from the UK’s
premier mototcross series calendar since the early 1990’s,
when the likes of Dave Thorpe, Rob Herring, Kurt Nichol and
Paul Malin were the men to beat. However thanks to West Devon
Motorcycle Club, who will be the organisers of this event
in association with the East Cumbria Club, this great venue
will once again be the setting for some fantastic racing.
For over twenty-five years there has been a track at Low
Gelt, but the new circuit that was built ten years ago, after
the original one was lost to the ground being used as a sand
quarry, now sits in the adjacent field. Enjoying the same
sandy soil, the new track also includes several hills and
various different elevations. In much recent times the circuit
has successfully hosted rounds of the British Under 21’s,
British 4 Stroke and British Masters championships.
The fight for the MX2 title could not be tighter with just
two points separating the top three riders with just four
motos remaining. Mike Brown – CAS Honda currently holds
the top spot thanks to a strong showing at the previous round,
which is also the same story for Gareth Swanepoel –
Molson Kawasaki who sits in second place at this point. Whilst
these two guys may have a slight advantage as they travel
to Brampton, it is Tommy Searle – KTM UK who has the
momentum in his favour. Following his disastrous day at Whitby,
Searle has bounced back with a solid 3-3 showing at last weekend’s
Czech GP and in doing so has reinstated himself as the favourite
to lift the 2007 MX2 crown.
Whilst out of the title running this year, after having suffered
an early season injury, ironically reigning MX2 champion Carl
Nunn – Bike It Yamaha may have his own part to play
in deciding who will take over his mantle, with him having
recorded race wins at the last two rounds. Scottish MX fans
will no doubt want to make the short journey South to support
Stephen Sword – Molson Kawasaki who’s return to
fitness and form was confirmed by a top five finish in the
Czech Republic.
Billy MacKenzie – De Groot Kawasaki and Ken De Dycker
– CAS Honda will resume their fierce battle for the
MX1 title, with only sixteen points separating these two riders
after six hard fought rounds to date. MacKenzie had the upper
hand last time out, but De Dycker is sure not to want to surrender
his crown without putting up a real battle. James Noble –
Multitek Honda, Brad Anderson – Pioneer Yamaha and Gordon
Crockard – PAR Honda are just three names who will add
extra spice to what already is set to be a hot close to the
season.
Situated just five miles from junction 43 of the M6, Brampton
has a packed schedule in store that will run from 9am right
through to 5.30pm, which includes two MXY2 races to add to
the normal four motos of championship action. The spectator
area has been enlarged to create excellent viewing, and with
a children’s play area, a licensed bar, a food village,
a trade area and free camping all on offer, this is simply
a must not miss event.
