CCM Junior Short Track series kicks off in style

• The single make CCM Junior Short Track series backed by the ACU, and the first British championship to use Bio Ethanol E85 as the exclusive permitted fuel, kicked off in style alongside the main Silkolene Short Track UK championship with a programme of action packed races. Tom Woolley was the young rider who shone through as he grabbed the first victory in the series that is aimed at 12 to 16 year olds, and offers a really affordable introduction to competitive two-wheel racing.

• The small, but enthusiastic field of teenagers included a real mix of abilities, with this being the first ever race for half of the entry. Established racers Tom Woolley, Ben Baker and Alfie Hyde showed their pedigree right from the start, and had a clear advantage in the early heats over their rivals. However the rest of the ‘brat pack’ soon shed their ‘inexperience nerves’ and begun to find their confidence with alarmingly rapid progress. With the front three coming under increasing pressure, Hyde was slightly over eager in achieving his first win over Woollely, and dropped it on two occasions as he tried to out run the most consistent rider on the night.

• Ben Baker was on the pace throughout the meeting, and spent most of the evening hot off the heels of overall winner Woolley. From the initial showing, Baker has declared himself as Tom’s nearest challenger, and should be in the running for the championship, whilst the remainder of the riders will no doubt use their first season to learn the craft of ‘backing it in’. Most improved rider of the meeting was Hadley Harthern, who was almost rewarded for his efforts with a podium finish in the double points final after having grabbed a shock holeshot, but suffered the commentator’s curse when he hit the deck seconds after being announced as ‘the man to watch’. Harthern remounted to take fourth spot, ahead of the ever-crashing Hyde. The Clews brothers, Ben and Jack finished third and fifth respectively.

• A race prepared CCM CXR230, plus support from Dunlop and Silkolene, and entries to the entire championship costs just £2500 – call 01204 544900 to put your child on the track, and with a real chance of taking their first step to sporting success, at a price you can afford.
