MSA Young Journalist & Photographer Awards
Glenn Freeman and Gavin Ireland win prestigious
Renault MSA Young Journalist & Photographer Awards
Glenn Freeman and Gavin Ireland have won the most sought-after
prizes for up-and-coming media in UK motor sport – the
Renault Motor Sports Association’s Young Journalist
& Photographer of the Year Awards.
Glenn, aged 19 from Witham, Essex, and Gavin, aged 23 from
Lancaster, will receive trophies and cheques for £1,000
at UK motor sport governing body the MSA’s prestigious
Night of Champions awards ceremony at the Royal Automobile
Club, Pall Mall, London on 20 January. At the event, they
will share the stage with the winners of all the MSA British
championships in 2005.
These special awards, launched in 2002 and designed to help
young motor sport journalists and photographers further their
careers, this year attracted submissions from a wide range
of ages, from 15 to 25 years old, covering events from karting,
rallying and historic racing through to sports cars, touring
cars and single-seaters.
Glenn earned his Young Journalist Award with coverage in
specialist magazine Motorsport News of British Formula 3,
junior single-seater racing and the inaugural A1GP event at
Brands Hatch. Gavin, meanwhile, submitted images from Racecar
Engineering, the Le Mans 24 Hours race and a new retro motor
sport book Autodrome to win the Young Photographer Award.
Colin Hilton, Chief Executive of the MSA, comments: "Many
congratulations to Glenn and Gavin, particularly in a year
when the overall entry level was arguably the highest we’ve
ever seen. The quality and range of work was excellent and
this reflects the talent that is out there. Certainly, the
judges took considerable time to reach a decision. We sincerely
look forward to greeting Glenn and Gavin at our Night of Champions
and we look forward to another exciting competition in 2006."
Glenn, who started work with MN in 2005 after achieving National
Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) qualifications
at Harlow College, says: "I’m very proud and honoured.
It’s an amazing feat to achieve the Award and I’m
very grateful to MN for taking me on and guiding me as a journalist.
I’ve always wanted to be a motor sport journalist and
this is a massive boost for my confidence and career."
Gavin, who only started photographing motor sport in the
UK two years ago, adds: "I’m staggered. This is
my first photography award and what a way to start! It means
so much, particularly as I’m self-taught and I know
this will count for a lot in the future."
Tim Jackson, Director, Press & PR, Renault UK says: "Glenn
and Gavin richly deserve their awards – their work was
of a very high standard and I’ll be delighted to present
them with their trophies and cheques for £1,000. Renault
prides itself on encouraging new talent and we were delighted
by the response to this year’s competition… everyone
who entered has the potential for a great career ahead of
them. We look forward to the next 12 months and the search
for the next recipients of this very prestigious award."
