Final Round of the 2006 Maxxis British Motocross Championship
Hawkstone Park – Sunday 10th September
Championship
contenders speak about Shropshire showdown
The 2006 Maxxis British Motocross championship is set for
a final round showdown like no other, with the MX2 class poised
for the closest finish in the history of the series. Recognised
as perhaps the strongest domestic championship on the planet,
the climax could not be played out on a more fitting stage
with the famous Hawkstone Park circuit hosting this nail biting
closing meeting on Sunday 10th September.
Proudly it will be Great Britain’s three 2006 MX of
Nations team members who will fight it out amongst each other
for the MX2 British championship just two weeks ahead of taking
on the rest of the World on behalf of Queen and country. With
Searle heading Nunn by four points going to the sandy Shropshire
track, and with Mackenzie still having an outside chance of
taking the title, the three riders in the frame commented
on the battle ahead.
Tommy Searle: “Hawkstone is a great
track and I am looking forward to racing there. It is pretty
sandy and gets rough. You have to be fit to go fast and this
is ideal for me. There will be some pressure as I am leading
but I am not too fussed and will go there and do the best
I can. With two good starts I am convinced everything will
be OK. As long as I can ride like I know I can then I will
be fine.”
Carl Nunn: “Hawkstone is one of my
favourite tracks because of its old-motocross-style layout.
It gets very rough and technical around there. It will be
a tough meeting because Tommy and I are so close and Billy
is still knocking on the door a little bit. We have all got
to play it cool and do our best. Obviously I want to win the
Championship and Tommy is younger than me. I remember how
I felt in similar situations years ago and I know what it
takes to win it. This year has been more difficult but I believe
I can do it. I just have to beat him in both races.”
Billy Mackenzie: “I just want to win
both races and end the season on a high. There is a mathematical
chance that I could win the Championship if Carl and Tommy
have a bad race but I am not going to do anything to make
that happen because it has occurred to me in the past and
I know how those kinds of tactics can make you feel. We have
all been consistent this year, but both Carl and I have had
one bad moto and that makes the difference. I had a good race
at Hawkstone for the International at the beginning of the
year so if I can ride like that again I will be happy.”
With a massive lead in the MX1 standings De Dycker is the
2006 champion in waiting, a point the Belgian rider was happy
to confirm.
Ken De Dycker: “I have already done
all the hard work and if nothing serious happens then getting
those three points at Hawkstone should be pretty easy but
you never know in racing. I hope I will be able to keep healthy
and then will try to do my best. It gets very rough there
and challenging to look for lines. I really hope I can come
away with the title.”
The action will get underway with practice starting at 9.30
am followed by the first race at 12.30 pm
