NORTH WEST LAWN MOWER RACING ASSOCIATION

Race Report from Scorton Country & Vintage Fayre & Castle Howard – 18/19th June 2005

A very busy weekend for the NWLMRA with two very different events. Good weather blessed both meetings and we had a new driver on Sunday. Josh Clarkson joined the club and proved to be pretty impressive for his first time racing a mower. Stuart Polkinghorne also raced for the time at an NWLMRA meeting this year

Saturday 18th June 2005
For the Saturday, we attended the inaugural Scorton Country & Vintage Fayre in the village of Scorton, near Garstang. The show was pretty big and it would take you most of the day to take it all in. We were given a small but level area in one corner of the showground. Unfortunately, some horses were tied up in our area and we had to wait for the owners to come and move them!

As this was a late addition to the Calendar, and more of a ‘lawn mower racing display’ than a full-on race meeting it was decided that there would not be any Championship Points available. With this in mind, we ran a series of races throughout the day. Phil Davies was running a new Tecumseh OHV engine on his Group 4, which was proving to be very fast out of corners. Unfortunately, it went bang late in the afternoon after a piece of the governor came loose and punctured the engine casing. Luckily, the damage isn’t terminal and it should be back up and running for the next meeting

Once the days racing was finished, the club loaded up and moved on to Castle Howard, near Malton for Sunday’s Race Meeting

Round 10 – Sunday 19th June 2005
Sunday dawned bright and early for the NWLMRA, with a short trek from Castle Howard’s official campsite to the race field. A huge field was available for racing, and although it looked smooth and flat, there were a few hidden bumps waiting to catch people out as the day wore on

It was decided to run a combined Points Race for all classes, as there were only 3 mowers that were not Group 3’s. #69 Matt Randall led from the lights ahead of #27 Stuart Polkinghorne, #86 Ian Carter, #96 Chris Randall, #31 Daz Whitehead, #18 Josh Clarkson, #11 Sam Shaw, #4 Dave Askew, #12 Martin Shaw, #26 Phil Brooks and #100 Phil Davies. Lap 2 saw Sam Shaw pass Josh Clarkson for 6th place. On lap 3 Chris Randall went to 3rd at the expense of Ian Carter, while Phil Davies passed Phil Brooks for 10th place. Lap 4 saw Ian Carter drop another place, this time it was Daz Whitehead on the move up to 4th. Dave Askew improved to 7th, while Josh Clarkson fell to 8th. Phil Davies took another place, moving up to 9th. Dave Askew passed Sam Shaw on lap 5 for 6th position and Chris Randall passed Stuart Polkinghorne for 2nd on lap 8. Matt Randall controlled the race from the front for the win ahead of Chris Randall, Stuart Polkinghorne, Daz Whitehead, Ian Carter, Dave Askew, Sam Shaw, Josh Clarkson, Martin Shaw, Phil Davies and Phil Brooks. Dave Askew and Martin Shaw both picked up class wins

The Grand Prix was next up with Stuart Polkinghorne taking the holeshot ahead of Matt Randall and Chris Randall. These 3 drivers pulled away from the rest and battled throughout the race. Stuart Polkinghorne went wide on the last corner of the last lap and was collected by Matt Randall. This allowed Chris Randall through to take the win. All 3 drivers covered 14 laps. Daz Whitehead drove a lonely race in 4th place, but remained on the lead lap with Dave Askew. Pete Collishaw retired after 8 laps following a racing incident with Dave Askew. Martin Shaw, Phil Davies, Josh Clarkson and Sam Shaw all dropped 1 lap while Phil Brooks dropped 4

All in all, a good weekends entertainment with some great racing thrown in. Sunday’s crowd seemed to be very enthusiastic and enjoyed the event enormously
