Race Report from the North-V-South
Brilliant weather blessed a fantastic weekend of racing at
the 2004 North-V-South. Overall honours went to the NWLMRA,
and the individual event was eventually won by The 69’ers
after an exciting finale to Sunday’s 2 hour Endurance
Race.
The
format of the meeting was changed into a winner-takes-all
style of competition after a lack of entries from our friends
in the BLMRA. First up was a series of 10 lap Sprint Races
on the short track. These were fast and frantic and with the
handicap system in place, this allowed the Group 2’s
to mix it the faster Group 3 machines. This helped RGM’s
#24 Dave Smith to take a couple of race wins on his Group
2. Team NKg were leading after the sprint races, 2nd was RGM,
with The 69’ers in 3rd place
A
Relay Race followed the Sprint Races, and this was won by
The 69’ers who utilised their speed on the long track
to win the event by about 10 seconds. Slick changeovers put
them in a strong position while many of their rivals wasted
precious seconds on the most vital part of this race. At the
end of this event, Team NKg were still leading, but The 69’ers
were now tied in second place with RGM both just 5 points
down on the event leaders
The next event was drag racing, with each driver competing
against all other machines apart from their team-mates. The
69’ers #96 Chris Randall proved to be the fastest man
in a straight line, recording an elapsed time of 7.89 seconds,
on his way to winning all his drag races. Short sharp races
saw some great racing taking place with many races being decided
on who had the quickest reaction to the starting lights. Overall
positions after this event saw a narrow 2 point lead for The
69’ers from Team NKg, with RGM hanging on in 3rd place
Sunday
brought the main event and a lot of points were up for the
grabs in the Endurance Race. A rolling start was the order
of the day, and it wasn’t long before disaster struck
for 2 of the leading teams. RGM’s #18 Sheldon Webster
was the first to retire after only 9 laps following brake
failure. Just 2 laps later Team NKg’s #31 Daz Whitehead
suffered with a blown engine whilst fending off the attack
of one of the 69’ers machines. #67 John Parden &
Andrew Howard racing for Team NKg also suffered in the Endurance
Race with small mechanical problems throughout the race. #24
Dave Smith of RGM was the other racer to have problems. A
special mention should go to both NP2 racers, #12 Martin Shaw
& #11 Sam Shaw, after they both drove their own machines
single handedly for 2 hours. The race win went to #96 Chris
& Matt Randall who eventually won a race long duel with
The Tango Squirts, #26 Robert Smith & Stuart Polkinghorne
Final positions for the individual team events: ~
1st The 69’ers 110 points
2nd Tango Squirts 78 points
3rd Team NKg 68 points
4th RGM 54 points
5th NP2 48 points
And for the Club event: ~
1st NWLMRA 256 points
2nd BLMRA 0 points
The next NWLMRA Race meeting is at Barnard Castle, Teeside
on May 29/30/31 and will form part of the Championship Series.
