NWLMRA Race Report from Round 17, Cwmythig Hill, Rhayader

The Final Round of the 2003 NWLMRA Championship Series was at Cwmythig Hill MotoX track. However, it brought no real surprises (other than the length of the journey to the meeting!) but the competitors enjoyed a good day’s racing on a fast and flowing circuit

Saturday 13th September, 2003 ~ Round 17
From the Start, was a very wide and long straight that went into a super fast 180-degree open left-hander. This went into a short straight and then into an open hairpin left, a short straight then a double apex right hander. Then another short straight, before a very tight left-hander, then a tight right and hairpin left combination that fed back onto the main straight. Lap times were about 31 seconds

The first race of the day was the Points Race, and 7 drivers took the Start. As the lights went Green, #31 Darren Whitehead got the hole-shot to lead from #27 Stuart Polkinghorne. The two drivers pulled away from the field and battled all the way to the flag. #27 Stuart Polkinghorne managed to sneak past on Lap 4 and held off the #31 to the flag. The gap at the flag was about half a second. 3rd place went to #96 Chris Randall. Both #18 Sheldon Webster and #24 Dave Smith took Class wins

Next up was the Grand Prix and again it was a battle between #27 Stuart Polkinghorne and #31 Darren Whitehead. The gap in the Championship was one lap at the Start of the Race (in favour of #27) and this time the best start went to #27 Stuart Polkinghorne, who out-dragged #31 Darren Whitehead to the first corner. However, at the end of the first lap, the #27 spun and stalled allowing the #31 to disappear into the distance. As #27 Stuart Polkinghorne rejoined the race, the gap was about 15 seconds, but he worked hard to stay on the lead lap and ended up finishing the race about 12 seconds back in 2nd place. So, the race win went the #31 Darren Whitehead but the Championship goes to #27 Stuart Polkinghorne

Into the non-championship races and wins were shared between #31 Darren Whitehead, #27 Stuart Polkinghorne and #26 Robert Smith. We had two contenders for Crash of the Day, #18 Sheldon Webster who rolled going onto the Main Straight (breaking his Steering Wheel) and #26 Robert Smith who managed to hit a fence head-on! The day finished with 2 of the St.John’s Ambulance guys having a couple of laps on the mowers. Both did well to stay on and not require their colleague’s assistance!
