England lose to Drexel in second meeting
PROMISING Mellor attacker Matt Marsh scored twice for England,
but his goals were not enough to stop the national side from
slipping to defeat against top American touring side Drexel
at the Phoenix Ground in Wilmslow.
Stockport midfielder Paul Fullerton, David Bryant and Cheadle
duo Gareth Wilkinson and Paul Flowers were also on the scoresheet,
but despite having led 4-3 at half-time, England were beaten
12-6.
On Friday night England defeated Drexel 10-5, but head coach
Dave Elwood fielded a completely different team with the exception
of a few experienced players who kept their place.
"We changed it around and played a different attack from
the one which we played on Friday night," revealed Greg
Caplin, the England manager.
"We played two new goalkeepers as well. The idea is to
give everyone in the 42-man squad a chance to prove themselves.
"Drexel played with pretty much the same team they did
on Friday, but we are determined to use these scrimmage matches
to see which combinations work, and those which don't."
Men's International Challenge matches (Phoenix Ground, Wilmslow):
England 6 Drexel 12 (Quarter scores: 3-0, 1-3, 2-6, 0-3).
Friday: England 10 Drexel 5 (QS: 4-0, 2-2, 3-3, 1-0).
