STOCKPORT WIN REFEREE'S TROPHY
CHRIS Livesey starred for Stockport as they defeated Mellor
to win the Referee's Trophy yesterday (Sunday).
The attacker top-scored with four goals and added four assists
as last year's double-winners brushed aside their arch-rivals
17-10 at Wilmslow Road.
Promising England attacker Thomas Gosnay, captain Chris Bland
and Neil Trennell all netted hat-tricks, while Joe Singleton
(2) and Simon McGuigan (2) scored the rest of the goals.
Attacker Daniel Hodgson was Mellor's star performer with
four goals and two assists, while new American signing Brandon
Wright scored a brace and had four assists.
But their efforts, and further goals from Sam Davidson (2),
Ollie Hall and Matt Marsh were not enough for last year's
league runners-up to reverse a 10-5 half-time deficit.
"It's nice to have got a little bit of revenge on Mellor,"
admitted Sean Ring, the Stockport head coach, who saw his
side beaten 13-12 by Mellor on the opening weekend of the
Men's North of England League Premier Division season a fortnight
ago.
"Nathan Singleton was excellent for us in the face-off
and won us a lot of possession, which was a big help.
"We don't like losing, but especially so against Mellor."
Ben McAllister, Mellor's captain and influential goalkeeper,
was disappointed his team had not played to their potential.
"We just didn't perform," admitted McAllister.
"It was a trophy at stake and we never got up for the
game."
A day earlier Stockport registered their first win in the
league this season with a 14-8 triumph over Wilmslow.
England midfielder Bland led the way with four goals as the
home side fought back from 8-7 down at half-time to take the
points.
Mike Malecki and Ben Lyon both scored four each as newly-promoted
Sheffield Steelers upset Timperley with an 11-10 victory at
the Abbeydale Sports ground.
Former England international Daren Baythorpe came up trumps
for Cheadle as they thumped arch-rivals Heaton Mersey.
The left-handed attacker top-scored with four goals for the
Kingsway Sports Club side as they beat last year's Senior
Flags runners-up 13-6.
Dave Carman, played in attack instead of midfield, scored
twice with Adi Bennett, while Gareth Wilkinson, Paul Flowers,
Andrew Beard, Ian Wilkinson and Martin Patterson were also
on the mark.
Mersey replied through Steve Grace (2), Dan Heighway, Andy
Bain and the Battersby brothers, Chris and Andy, but they
Oakley Villas boys always trailed.
"It was a brilliant day for us and a great performance,"
said Geoff Condron, Cheadle's delighted coach.
"The team spirit was excellent and everyone was pulling
for each other."
Manchester Waconians extended their winning run to two matches
with a 10-3 victory over Brooklands Hulmeians, while Mellor
hammered Boardman & Eccles 21-3 at Welbeck Road.
