Edinburgh taste North Universities glory
EDINBURGH University have won the Men's North Universities
Tournament having maintained an impressive unbeaten record
at this year's competition in Stirling, Scotland.
Nottingham, who play in Division 2 of the Men's North of England
League, finished runners-up after just one defeat, a 2-1 loss
to Edinburgh, and also a goalless draw with hosts Stirling.
Glasgow, Durham and Lancaster were all expected to field teams
this year but withdrew at the last minute, but the competition
was a big success again, with more teams expected to compete
next year in the competition's third term.
There was no North winner last year because the scheduled
finals' day at Flags Festival Weekend was disrupted by heavy
rain and any chance of playing the final were halted by an
unusable pitch at Rochdale's Bridgefold Road ground.
This year's South Men's Tournament is scheduled for April
14 in Sheffield, although details have yet to be confirmed.
Event organiser Mike Aspinall said: "It was a great tournament
this year, with quite a few American players in attendance.
"Edinburgh deserved the title, they played very well,
but for all the teams the day proved a lot of fun and a great
advert for lacrosse."
