Boardman clinch memorable comeback
BOARDMAN and Eccles clinched their first win in a month with
one of the best fightbacks ever seen in the Premier Division.
The Welbeck Road boys trailed Wilmslow 12-6 early in the
concluding quarter, but hit back in stylish fashion to score
nine goals without reply and snatch victory from the jaws
of defeat.
Seven goals from American attacker David Vail - in his last
match for the Lancashire team - and five goals from fellow
Transatlantic star Charlie Towers proved key as Boardman deservedly
took the points.
"We self-destructed," admitted Wilmslow skipper
James Perrin. "How we lost, I just don't know. They (Boardman)
killed us in the last quarter."
Indeed. Wilmslow led 4-2, 7-4 and 11-6 with Ashley Tarron-Jones
top-scorer with four goals, and looked for all the world as
if they were going to win.
But a reinvigorated Boardman took advantage of a string of
Wilmslow penalties and found no problem in finding the back
of the visitors' net.
"We were excellent," praised Boardman captain Nick
Anderton. "Wilmslow gave away a lot of penalties in the
last quarter - and we were able to capitalise.
"The ball was always in their (Wilmslow's) half. It's
one of the best comebacks I've ever been involved in."
Anderton is hopeful victory will spur his side to success
at home to Manchester Waconians in their Lancashire Cup last
16 clash.
"It's a confidence-booster beating Wilmslow," added
Anderton. "Hopefully that will inspire us when we come
to play Wacs."
