England's men handed early World Cup test
England's men have started their preparations for next year's
World Cup in Canada in fine style with two comprehensive victories
over top touring side USA West.
Heaton Mersey's Chris Battersby top-scored with four goals
in a 12-3 win in Didsbury at Parrs Wood College on Saturday,
while Joe Singleton (3), Dan Green, Steve Grace, Gareth Wilkinson,
Kevin Ryan and Josh Shingler were also on the scoresheet.
The national team then followed up with a 12-9 triumph at
Wilmslow Lacrosse Club on Sunday when the side's met for a
second time in as many days.
Cheadle's Wilkinson led the way with four goals as Dave Elwood's
team battled back from 4-0 after the first quarter.
Mark Reynolds (2), Matt Beadle, Battersby, Shingler, Andy
Brickell, Green and Grace were also on the mark.
"The World Cup is less than a year away, so playing
top American sides is good practice for us," said Greg
Caplin, the England manager.
England fielded a side all aged under 25, except for experienced
campaigner Dan Green.
The team also included 16-year-olds Tom Leahy and Shingler,
both of whom received praise for their performances.
Manchester Waconians youngster Tom Gallon also impressed
in the face-off, dominating that crucial position and giving
England the bulk of possession on both days.
“If anything we were stronger on Sunday than Saturday,
which is a credit to the Americans for giving us a closer
game,” added Caplin.
Men's International Tour matches (Manchester): England 12,
USA West 3 (Quarter scores: 3-1, 4-1, 3-1, 2-0); England 12,
USA West 9 (QS: 0-4, 5-1, 1-1, 6-3).
