Pelletier keeps Mellor within touching distance of Stockport
MELLOR stretched their impressive winning run to nine games
on the spin this weekend - and with victory continue to fight
Stockport, the leaders by a point, tooth and nail for the
domestic crown.
The Longhurst Lane club registered a comfortable 19-2 triumph
over strugglers Boardman & Eccles in the Men's North of
England League Premier Division, while Stockport, the Daily
Telegraph Senior Flags holders, thumped Brooklands Hulmeians
15-4 at Beech Road.
American attacker Andy Pelletier, has he has done for most
of the season, led Mellor's charge with seven goals to maintain
his mantle as the Premier Division's top-scorer this term.
A hat-trick from Andy Etherington and further goals from
Scott James (2), Dave Vickers (2), Andy Brickell (2), Daniel
Hodgson, Sam Davidson and defender Tom Cunningham made sure
Mellor avenged their only defeat of the season so far - a
16-11 loss to Boardman in October.
Mellor have six more matches in which to leapfrog their rivals
at the summit, with both teams due to meet on Feb 26 in what
could prove to be a title-decider.
Cheadle, the former double winners, are third and five points
adrift of the leaders despite their 10-8 victory away to Timperley.
Having beaten their opponents 20-7 earlier in the season,
Cheadle found the going tough, but did enough to win courtesy
of five goals from Phil Lynch, the veteran attacker, and other
goals from Dave Carman (2), Andrew Beard (2) and Paul Flowers.
England attacker James Shuttleworth scored four for Timperley.
Basement side Rochdale suffered their 11th defeat in 12 matches
after a 10-8 loss away to Manchester Waconians.
England midfielder Tom Caplin top-scored for Wacs with four
goals, while Neil Marshall and Matt Nugent, both back from
injury, replied in vain with hat-tricks for Rochdale.
Wilmslow pushed defending champions Heaton Mersey the distance
at Styal Road, but despite goals from John Mountney (2), Chris
Mountney, Ashley Tarran-Jones and James Perrin, were beaten
8-5. Steve Grace (2), Dan Heighway (2), Chris Battersby (2),
Matt Florio and Andy Ellison on the mark for Mersey.
