Brickell joins Mellor in controversial move
MELLOR, the 2001 League champions, have signed Timperley
midfielder/attacker Andy Brickell.
Brickell, who figured for England's gold-winning team at
the European Championships in Prague last summer, was hunted
by a number of clubs in the Men's North of England League
Premier Division.
But the youngster opted for Mellor who are second in the
top flight and hot on the heels of Stockport, the leaders
and last season's Daily Telegraph Senior Flags holders.
However, the move has saddened Timperley where Brickell has
played for a number of years. His transfer comes at a time
when a proposed transfer window could be implemented in time
for the 2005/6 season.
Concerns have already been raised by clubs in the North of
England League who feel a monopoly of power is going to four
clubs from the 10 currently playing in the Premier Division.
But Ben McAllister, the England goalkeeper and Mellor skipper,
has defended Brickell's decision to leave Stockport Road.
"Andy came to us in the summer and expressed an interest
to join us," McAllister said.
"He likes the way Mellor have adopted a professional
attitude this season. He's a good addition to our squad and
adds to a growing number of our mobile midfielders."
