Wacs look to stem Stockport attack
MANCHESTER Waconians are hovering nicely in fifth position
in the Men's North of England League - but the Wilmslow Road
side cannot win the Premier Division.
However, there is the slight chance Phil Greenwood's team
could surprise a few people in the Daily Telegraph Senior
Flags - and maybe even win silverware.
Wacs, who thumped Boardman & Eccles 16-5 at the weekend,
play holders Stockport in the quarter-finals of the Flags
on Satuday.
And Greenwood is hoping Saturday's success will be the catalyst
for victory in a match Stockport are clear favourites to win.
"We gave Boardman a good pasting," said Greenwood.
"What's really pleasing is that the younger players we
have brought in are all performing well.
"We traded early doors with Boardman but although it
took us a while to get going, we were up for it. It was pleasing
to have a good performance ahead of the Stockport match."
Wacs handed 16-year-old midfielder John Shingler a first team
debut on Saturday, and the teenager replied in kind with a
goal for his club.
Dominic Fitzgerald and Kevin Ryan led the way against Boardman
with four goals as they raced into a 7-2 half-time advantage
and never looked back. Ian Cain added a hat-trick and Chris
Fetter (2), Dave Crawford and skipper Steve Shanahan added
the rest of Wacs' goals.
"We're looking forward to the match with Stockport,"
added Greenwood. "It's a great chance for us to get to
the Flags semi-finals.
"Stockport were worthy winners last season, but we will
must just concentrate on our own game and take the game to
them.
"We will have to play with a degree of discipline and
hopefully stem their attacking flow. Im sure it's going to
be a great match."
- Wacs Under-19s battled bravely against Stockport in the
final of the Norman Barber Knockout Cup at Timperley on Sunday
night, but despite leading 2-1 they were beaten 9-4.
Shingler added to his debut goal on Saturday with a brace,
while Nicky Watson also scored.
