Boardman playing for pride
BOARDMAN and Eccles captain Nick Anderton admits his side
have nothing more to play for this season apart from "pride".
The Welbeck Road boys have avoided any chance of relegation
from the Men's North of England League Premier Division -
but still have four games to contest in what Anderton hopes
will be a strong finish to the season.
"It was the usual story - we started well and then faded
away as the game went on," said Anderton, whose side
were beaten 16-5 away to Manchester Waconians at the weekend.
"It should have been a closer game, but hopefully we
can re-group and get some good results before the end of the
season."
Boardman have remaining matches against Stockport, Wilmslow,
Timperley and Heaton Mersey.
Anderton had high hopes that Boardman might push for a top
four finish this term, but despite an excellent start which
yielded three wins in their first four outings, the Lancashire
side suffered a surprise dip in form.
"It's been disappointing in lots of ways," added
Anderton. "To start so well and then to slump like we
have done is not very good, which is a shame because we were
full of confidence at the beginning of the season."
American Charlie Towers netted a hat-trick for Boardman and
David Vail was also on target with a brace, but four goals
each from Dominic Fitzgerald and Kevin Ryan, a hat-trick from
Ian Cain and other strikes from Chris Fetter (2), Dave Crawford,
skipper Steve Shanahan and John Shingler gave Wacs their seventh
win of the campaign.
Boardman were without attacker Chris Brown and Dave Hulbert,
players who Anderton is hopeful will return for his team's
next match, at home to Stockport on February 19th.
"We were missing a couple of players, but the score reflects
how badly we played and how well Wacs played. It would be
nice if we could just end the season on a high note."
Boardman and Eccles A edged further away from the relegation
zone in Division 3 with a 12-7 victory at home to Stockport
B.
- Boardman Under-16s recorded a 9-6 victory against Wilmslow
in the Boy's North of England Junior League. Captain Rob Grubisic
scooped the Man-of-the-Match award for his efforts.
