ELA CHIEF EXECUTIVE WINS TOP AWARD
DAVID Shuttleworth, Chief Executive of the English Lacrosse
Association (ELA), is toasting sweet success having been honoured
for his work with lacrosse.
David, who played lacrosse from an early age, has won the
Emlyn Jones Memorial Award for Exceptional Services in the
Administration of Sport.
The award was presented by Mike Reynolds, Chairman of the
British Association of Sports Administration at the recent
National Governing Body Chief Executive’s Convention
in Warwick.
"It's a real honour to have received this award,"
said a delighted David, who still manages the Under-16s Boys
junior team at Timperley Lacrosse Club.
"I think the award reflects the growing credibility that
lacrosse and the ELA has in the eyes of other organisations
and people in sport.
"The ELA staff and many volunteers have worked very hard
in recent years to put lacrosse in a position where it can
be one of the major growth sports in the UK.
"The growing confidence that people have in the game
is reflected in the recent increase in funding that the ELA
has received from Sport England."
David started playing lacrosse aged 11 for William Hulme Grammar
School and went on to play for Old Hulmeians, Oxford University,
Hampstead and finally Timperley, where he ended his 24-year
playing career.
David's most treasured lacrosse moment was playing for England
in the first ever World Championships, staged in Canada in
1967.
"Lacrosse continues to grow and grow," added David.
"The introduction of a plastic stick, compared to the
wooden ones I used to play with, has been a huge boost to
the development of the game.
"Without the plastic stick the game wouldn't be growing
like it is all over the world. In my years in the game I've
also noticed the skill levels have improved right across the
board - and I think the plastic has helped to influence that
as well."
