Wacs recruit wealth of multi-national talent
MANCHESTER Waconians have signed two new American players
and an Australian as they prepare to gun for honours in the
North of England League Premier Division, which starts this
Saturday (2 October).
The Wilmslow Road club have signed Chris Fetter and Nate Bauers,
from New York and Connecticut respectively, to replace last
year's American duo, Ian Cassidy and Kris Heller, who have
returned back 'Across the Pond'.
Fetter is a 26-year-old midfield player who has joined from
Canisius College, while Bauers is a 22-year-old long-stick
defender from Fairfield Connecticut College.
Wacs have also signed Australian midfield/attacker David Green,
who contacted the club via their website on the chance of
playing lacrosse in the North West.
Green heralds from Glenelg Lacrosse Club, Down Under, and
Wacs have already helped him find a job locally to help him
settle.
Every year Wacs try and recruit international players to bolster
their squad, with the dual role of using their overseas experience
to help improve the club's younger players. And this year
is no exception.
Club chairman Eddie Owen said: "We did a bit of scouting
around and we've found two American players who we felt would
best complement our team.
"Chris is a little bit older than Nate and we are hoping
his coaching skills can be used by our other coaches. I'm
sure we can learn a lot from both players.
"David contacted us from Australia and we're glad to
have him. He looks like a useful player. Essentially this
year we are looking for a top 3 position in the Premier Division.
"We'd like some silverware because the trophy cabinet
has been looking a little bare for the last few seasons."
Wacs have also recruited former Nottingham University player
Lee Houston, with Ollie Finlay and Tom Senivaratne both joining
from Sheffield University. Attackers Tom Owen and Tom Howles
have both left to play for Sheffield where they will be studying
for the next few years.
Wacs open this season's account against Stockport, last year's
Senior Flags winners, at the weekend, on the back of a 12-7
pre-season loss at the hands of Mellor. Phil Greenwood's team
experimented with a number of players, including a couple
of promising 16-year-old players who are pushing for regular
first-team slots.
Meanwhile, Wacs A visit Norbury in Division 2, while Wacs
C take on Timperley B in Division 5 in a re-arranged fixtures.
Wacs C were due to play Boardman & Eccles B, but the Welbeck
Road club have pulled out of the league and their fixtures
will be fulfilled by Timperley B this season.
- Wacs Under-19 team reached the semi-finals stages of the
Ted Donnet Trophy at Georges Road, Sale, but despite a valiant
effort were beaten 5-2 by eventual winners Stockport.
